I just realised something massive - most of us have the productivity virus!!
Definition: the productivity virus is a virus that makes productivity more important than anything else.
Nowadays it is so scary to do nothing, so wrong to be behind on a task, so unacceptable to not meet a deadline. From our very early years at school we are taught that we 'fail' if a homework is not submitted on time. At university we are given a pile of books to read for each subjects, with the teachers knowing very well that even doing all the readings for one subject is not feasible. At work we are expected to complete a number of different tasks under tight deadlines, and if we don't it means we are not as productive as our colleagues, and therefore can be easily replaced.
The scary thing is that the pace at which the world 'advances' is only going to become faster. Just like the invention of the washing machine allowed people to do more things by spending less time on washing, technology is today increasingly replacing jobs to make everything even faster. No wonder people are more and more stressed, depressed, or have ADHD.
But where are we actually going? No one knows! And no one seems to ask that question - we only keep creating, working, 'living'.
What a curse it is to link happiness and self-love to productivity! Indeed, if you do that you will always be miserable - whether you do too much or too little.
I have a theory that explains why this happened in the first place. It is linked to this story:
Before the appearance of humans on planet earth, three demons gathered and decided to make Happiness hard to find. Where to hide their Happiness was the question. The first demon said 'Let's bury it at the bottom of the ocean!', but the two other demons answered 'No, that will not do because humans will go there one day and find it'.
Then the second demon said: 'Let's take it to the top of the highest mountain and hide it there!' But the other two demons said 'No, that will not do either, because they will eventually climb every mountain and once again find their Happiness'.
The third demon thought for a long time and then said: 'Here is what we will do. We will hide their Happiness deep in the center of their own being, for humans will never think to look for it there.'
The three demons agreed that this was the perfect hiding place, and the deed was done. And since that time humans have been going up and down the earth, digging, diving, climbing, and exploring - searching for something already within themselves.
So, do you have the productivity virus?
